Frequently asked questions-Embossing

What is embossing and how is it applied?

Embossing is achieved by applying pressure on cardstock between a specially created metal
die and a formed shape. The pressure forces the paper to bend into the custom shape.
The effect is to raise the paper above the level of the card on the front.
If the impression is indented on the front side, we would call it debossing.

A metal die can cost from $150-$300, however, we can also use reusable metal dies
for many projects, and, as a result, save the cost of the permanent metal die.

What are the drawbacks with Embossing?

Cardstock is soft, so the edges of the embossed area will become beveled making,
the image area larger, and the available inking area smaller.
The choice of a logo is very important. Graphics with solid areas,
lines, etc, are good choices. BUT, ask your printer for their advice first!

Can I add ink and/or foil to the embossing area?

Yes, this requires registering the embossed area to the ink or foil,
creating additional difficulty for the pressman, therefore added costs.
The result can be very beautiful, however, it is recommended that you start
your business with a more reasonably priced card, and add this kind of
expensive project later

Are there any New developments with embossing?

Yes, previously, the only way to emboss cardstock was by using
a metal die, custom created for the client. The die cost was typically
in the area of $150-$300. Then add the embossing run, and the cardstock,
and a set of embossed business cards would start at $300 and up.
Recent developments have allowed the use of a disposable dies, drastically
lowering the cost of embossing cards, some of them under $200 including shipping
