Why does my card cost so much to print, and how can I keep the price down?
Most people start this way,
they open their favorite software program to design a business card.
Starting simply with black ink, bit by bit embellishments are added, like adding
a blue ink logo to the black ink text, then changing the company name to blue
and adding a black shadow. Then, just for fun, adding a bit of red ink for extra sparkle.
They are having such fun designing their own card, they don't realize that
every embellishment that is added creates an additional difficulty for the press,
and as a result, additional charges. Yes. every embellishment, no matter how tiny.
We think you should start this way
First, decide how much you want to spend when purchasing your business cards
Then, talk to your printer, and ask questions, such as
1) How much will it cost to print cards with black ink on standard 80# cardstock,
2) Is it more to add another color of ink, like blue?
3) What if the blue ink touches the black ink?
4) How much additional is it if I add a third color ink?
5) What if I have a line that goes off the edge of the card (bleeds)
on two sides, left and right edge of the card?
6) What if I have a large area of ink on the left (or right or bottom) side
of the card that bleeds at the top, left and bottom, (three sides)
7) Does it cost extra to print on both sides of the card?
These are just a few of the items that add charges to your printing prices.
So taking a little time in the beginning of your process can save you many $$ over the years.
This is true of all of your printing needs. First establish a realistic budget
then talk to your printer before designing your project
Our philosophy is this, when your business is young, start simply to save costs,
like purchasing the excellent quality, yet low priced cards here and when
business is making a good profit, then add the embellishments as the budget allowance grows
